Auto repair and maintenance is not to be taken lightly – your car not only need to be running at optimal performance levels, they also need to be repaired and maintained within a proper schedule and budget; two factors that many mechanic shops take no notice of.
Many people aren’t skilled at auto repairs, which is why we look for a good mechanic in the first place. How do we know that they are being reasonable about their prices. The answer: we don’t know. When you find theright mechanic for your needs, you will have a better shot at getting your vehicle fixed in a superior fashion, without being taken for a ride.
Start your search by word of mouth. Ask your friends and family which repair shops they visit. People generally don’t return to a mechanic that serves them poorly, so you’ll have a good chance of landing a nice, reliable mechanic this way. When you have a few names, consider locations. Find the automotive shops that are in a convenient location. (ie. Close to home).
Don’t wait until you’re in a dire situation; plan a routine appointment with the auto repair shop you have chosen and then do a little price matching with other places. When you’re there don’t be afraid to ask some easy questions.
Do they use new, used or recovered parts for large repairs?
What are their labor rates?
Do they offer rental vehicles or a shuttle service?
What services do they offer?
What is their warranty policy on parts or labor?
A great way to snoop is also to research the shop online to see if there are any complaints against their work or billing. Contact the better business bureau as well to see if there is a record of complaints filed against the shop.
If you’re faced with a large-scale breakdown and need a different level of work done, make sure to call around and compare prices, and always ask which parts they will be using – make specific or general auto parts.
As with any service, make sure there is the promise of a long-term relationshiop that you can build on over the years. The best auto repair shops are the ones that pride themselves in honesty, professionalism and customer service. You return to them for your work and they’ll leave you with a functioning vehicle. And the shirt you came in with.
